Peaceful Solutions First

Although pesky and potentially dangerous, bees are actually a helpful creature. Why are bees helpful? Bees pollinate plants. They keep the ecosystem healthy by pollinating nearly every species of plant known to man. With bees hanging around, you likely have a vibrant and healthy yard. Before you need to know how to get rid of bees, you need to know where to find them. While looking for the hive, keep a safe distance away and if you find yourself being steadily surrounded by bees, stay calm and move away slowly, making no sudden movements. There should be an area where you see large numbers of bees, either at dawn or dusk. Bees return to their hive before dark, and come out again at first light.

If you watch carefully, you’ll be able to locate the hive fairly quickly. If you’re aware of the need to rid yourself of bees, then you probably already have some idea where it’s at. Once you have discovered the hive location, you’ll have to spray it. Again, only resort to killing the bees if all other options have been exhausted.  There’s a number of different treatments and sprays available to kill bees.

Once you have selected the poison you’re going to use, you’ll need to put on your bee killing gear. Wear long pants and a long shirt with elastic at the ankles and wrists so the bees can’t fly into your clothing and sting you. A face mask isn’t a bad idea, either. If you don’t have a face mask, you can make one by cutting holes in a paper bag and placing it over your head. You’ll need to tuck the bag into the neck of your shirt. Be sure to take a picture as well, because while this outfit is effective, it’s also funny. Wait until just after dusk, and spray the poison directly into the beehive. Most of the bees will be dead the following day, but you may need to repeat the spray once or twice, wearing your bee killing uniform, of course. If you’ve sprayed directly into the nest and you still have a problem with bees, it’s time to contact an exterminator for further assistance or information on how to get rid of bees.

You may have thought that you would be done after you killed the bees. If you want to stop now, you need to be aware that another colony may move into a recently vacated hive. To truly get rid of the bees, you need to dispose of the hive. Depending upon where the hive is located, it can be extremely easy to clean up. If it’s in the ground, simply fill in the hole to block access. Some hives are underneath porches, eaves, and awnings. Simply knock these down and throw them away. Sometimes though, bees choose to build their hive in highly inconvenient places. If the hive is in the walls of your home, you may need to call a professional for removal.

If you only see one or two bees hanging around your flower garden every few days, it’s not necessary to learn how to get rid of bees. That means you live close enough to a hive for the bees to fly to you, but probably far enough away that you’re safe from anything but the occasional sting. Always keep in mind that bees are good for the environment. Please make the attempt to have the hive safely removed before resorting to killing the bees.
