How To Get Rid Of Mice Forever
Dog collars, pet gifts, and more!
Anyone who’s ever lived in an old house or a house in a rural area has wondered at some point or another how to get rid of mice. Old houses can have holes small enough to allow mice to squeeze through, and country homes or farm houses will probably deal with mice simply because they’re surrounded by an ideal habitat for mice. Despite what has caused your infestation, you can be secure in the knowledge that it’s fairly easy to rid yourself of mice.
Determine if You Have Mice or Rats
If you suspect rodents have invaded your home you should first determine what type of rodent it is. Mice are much smaller than rats, and leave smaller signs of their presence. Check the area you suspect is infested. If you see small brown droppings slightly smaller than a grain of rice, you have mice. If the droppings are larger and about the size of a grain of corn, you have rats. If you’ve determined your problem is not rats, you’re ready to learn how to get rid of mice, and keep them away forever.
Before you can truly rid your home of mice, you’ll need to mouse-proof your house. Clean up any cardboard or newspapers that have accumulated as these make excellent hiding spots for mice. Be sure your food is stored in air tight containers or in the refrigerator. Keep a lid on your garbage can at all times. Purchase a peppermint essential oil to either spray your home with, or soak into a cloth and place in corners. Mice will avoid peppermint as they find the odor overpowering and offensive. Finally, ensure all holes or tears in the walls are covered. This is the most important thing you need to know when learning how to get rid of mice.
The tried and true solution to getting rid of mice is a simple trap. You place a piece of bait on a weight sensitive spring loaded platform, and when the mouse swings by for a snack he’s snapped and killed. Some experts claim that killing mice doesn’t actually eradicate the problem, as more mice simply move in to take its place.
If you’re somewhat queasy about a dead rodent, or if you simply feel killing the mice is inhumane, you can also purchase live traps. These traps have a one way door, which will allow the mouse to enter but not exit. Once the mouse is in the trap you can release it a safe distance from your house.
For those who don’t have pets or children to worry about, poison can be an effective way to get rid of mice. There’s many different brands of poison available, some more potent than others. Be sure to read the instructions carefully, and never handle any type of poison with your bare hands. One disadvantage to poisoning your mice is they can die almost anywhere. A dead mouse in the wall can be extremely difficult to remove, and can cause an unpleasant odor to linger in your home for several days or weeks.
Eradicating Mice Without Traps
If you prefer a different solution than trapping or killing, the oldest protection against mice is a cat. Cats are natural predators for mice, and can keep the population depleted simply by being present. Mice brave enough to enter the cat’s domain will be summarily played with, batted around, and then eaten. A cat can help rid you of mice and probably single handedly teach you how to get rid of mice.
One of the more unorthodox methods that can evict your furry house guest’s is snake feces. You don’t need to take a journey through the woods to locate it though. Contact a pet store that carries snakes or a zoo, and ask if you can have snake feces. They may shake their heads and look at you strangely, but they will likely give it to you. Place the feces in the areas where you see mice most often, and around any holes that look active. This will scare the mice into leaving, as snakes are also a natural predator.
If you’re figuring out how to get rid of mice, the most important thing for you to do is lock away their food source and block their entrance to your home. As with most infestations, however, if you have tried everything and had no success, you always have the option of calling an exterminator to take care of the problem for you.
